Nottinghamshire County Council Case Study

Nottinghamshire County Council (NCC) approached our team to assess their data skills and identify opportunities for improvement. We conducted a comprehensive assessment of NCC's data literacy landscape and provided a report with recommendations for development.

Nottinghamshire County Council (NCC), a major local authority in England, approached our team at the Nottingham University Business School to assess their current data skills and identify opportunities for improvement. As part of their 2023-2028 data strategy, NCC aspires to become a data-driven organisation with a workforce proficient in data literacy.

The project

Led by Sanmaathi Perumal (MSc Human Resource Management and Organisation (HRMO)) and supported by Dr. Andri Georgiadou (Associate Professor and the Department Director of External Engagement with expertise on equality, diversity, and inclusion at work), our team conducted a comprehensive assessment of NCC's data literacy landscape. We employed a multi-faceted research methodology, including a thorough background review, ten one-on-one interviews with leaders and managers and two focus group discussions with staff across various roles.

The project aimed to address a number of key objectives:

  • Understand NCC's organisational requirements and ambitions
  • Map data skills and identify gaps across the organisation
  • Identify opportunities and quantify potential benefits
  • Determine future skills required for development
  • Provide recommendations and a roadmap to address skills gaps

Outcomes and results

Our team delivered a detailed report that revealed diverse levels of data literacy understanding across the council and also highlighted key challenges and skills gaps. This enabled us to provide extensive recommendations addressing each of the project objectives and we also included a comprehensive roadmap for implementation.

Our expert analysis and recommendations have therefore equipped Nottinghamshire County Council with:

  • a clear understanding of their current data literacy landscape
  • information about skills gaps and opportunities for improvement
  • a tailored roadmap for implementing data literacy initiatives
