NUBS Malaysia students win ICAEW Malaysia Business Challenge 2019
A team of Business School students from the University of Nottingham Malaysia emerged as one of the winners of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) Malaysia Business Challenge 2019 held in April this year. The Nottingham team was one of two teams that represented Malaysia at the regional ICAEW China and South-East Asia Business Challenge 2019 in Singapore in May 2019, where they met 11 other finalist teams from China, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam and Myanmar.
The national leg of the competition saw participation from 21 teams from private and public universities around Malaysia vying for two top positions. Nottingham was represented by second-year Nottingham University Business School (NUBS) Malaysia students Alice Yong Jia Xin, Mohammad Uqail Esa, Qussay Al-Qirim, Sebastian Freeland and Shaarif Hooda, and third-year student Ri Ji Hyon. Third-year student Phung Pei Shan led the team in the regional finals.
“The ICAEW Malaysia Business Challenge was one of the toughest and most intensive competitions I have participated in,” said team member Ri Ji Hyon.
“We had to prepare and present realistic analyses and strategies for an organisation within a very short period of time. However, it was a most insightful experience as we learnt ways of approaching real business problems and how to formulate solutions within limited timeframes and resources.”
As National Champions, the Nottingham team received a cash prize of RM3000. The Regional Grand Champion title went to a team of students from Universitas Indonesia.
Team member Alice Yong fondly reminisces her experience at the regional finals: “It was an honour to have represented the country on the international stage at the ICAEW China and South-East Asia Business Challenge. We shared ideas and perspectives with participants from diverse backgrounds.”
“It was not easy taking on the challenge of solving a complicated case study which involved financial analysis and the use critical thinking skills, within a tight time constraint. However, I believe that all the ups and downs we experienced are key to bringing our learning and understanding of business issues to a higher level,” Alice added.
Director of Student Experience, Engagement and Employability at NUBS Malaysia, Dr Roy Khong, says, “We are extremely proud of our students’ achievements at the ICAEW Malaysia Business Challenge 2019, along with successes in other business competitions this year. We are also grateful that they have had this invaluable opportunity to apply what they have learnt in the classroom to solving real-life business situations.”
University of Nottingham Malaysia students also recently emerged National Champions of the L’Oreal Brandstorm 2019 competition, winners of the PwC Trust Builders Challenge 2019, second runners-up of the KPMG Innovation and Collaboration Challenge 2019, and third runners-up of the HSBC Business Case Competition 2019.
