Two Nottingham chemists were among the 70,000 volunteers selected to contribute to the Olympic Games as “Games Makers”. Dr Samantha Tang, Public Awareness Scientist and James Scragg, Postgraduate Student, were “the public face of the Games”.
Both scientists were there to welcome spectators and answer any queries they had. Samantha was based at Greenwich Park where equestrian sports took place, and James worked at Lord’s Cricket Ground, the venue for archery competitions.
Regarding her experience, Samantha said, “I saw this as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to contribute to such an important event. I got to work with a fantastic team of enthusiastic individuals and meet people from across the world. I just wanted to demonstrate the friendliness, helpfulness and hospitality of the British people to the best of my ability. I consider myself extremely lucky to have been given this opportunity and I loved every single moment of it.”
James commented on his expereince of being part of the Greatest Show on Earth, "The Olympic Games in my backyard, I had to be there. Wearing our iconic purple uniforms we welcomed the rest of the world to London and treated them to a spectacular display of sport and culture. Opportunities like this do not come along very often and if you are fortunate to get the chance, take it".
