Now completed, the student accommodation building in the corner of Station Street and Trent Street brought an opportunity to create a new public square that opened a new direct link between Trent Street and the Canal Towpath. The new landscaped space features a lime tree, two apple trees and two pear trees as well as ornamental bushes, and it has capacity for small vehicles such as cafe/food-vans and market stalls. A ramp and two sets of steps connect Station Street with the canal tow path (photo prior to completion in September 2020). In this public place also sits a WWII pillbox that was saved from demolition by a Nottingham City Council Urban Design Officer.
The Urban Room was the hub that brought the universities, a local school, the Canal and River Trust and various community groups together to protect and preserve the structure, bringing local history to life through a new information board and murals commissioned by the Canal and River Trust.
