The VI International Dostoevsky Symposium was held at The University of Nottingham in August 1986. It was the largest gathering of foreign Slavists yet to assemble at Nottingham, with over 100 Dostoevsky specialists from Europe, Australasia and the USA. Among the participants was the only Soviet representative, Professor Georgii M Friedlenderof the Institute of Russian Literature of the Soviet Academy of Sciences in Leningrad, who later published an account of the Symposium in the Soviet literary journal, Literaturnaya Gazeta. Former Head of Department Frank Seeley also returned to Nottingham to give a paper.
