Professor Georgii M Friedlender in Leningrad had first visited Nottingham to attend the VI International Dostoyevsky Symposium held in 1986. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by The University of Nottingham in 1990, and continued to show an active interest in the research of members of the department working in the field of Russian literature until his death in December 1995.
