The department published the first issue of its very own magazine, Slavonica, in May 1968.
Containing contributions from both staff and students on a range of Slavonic topics, articles in this first edition included ‘Some Notes on Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy and the Redstokisty’ by Malcolm Jones, a translation of Boresław Lesminan’s Ludzie (People) by Gerald Stone, and ‘Pushkin, Mickiewicz and Russia’ by the student editor in chief, Joe Garlinski.
A notable special edition was published in December 1977, marking the department’s 60th anniversary. Edited by Mark Knight, it contained a celebration of the history of the department featuring personal recollections of all the former heads of department, as well as an interview with the then head, Monica Partridge, on her hopes for the department’s future.
In later years, issues of Slavonica were produced by a team of students during the departmental project in the last two weeks of the summer term, and served as programmes for the annual plays.
