A performance of Anton Chekhov's one-act farce The Anniversary was directed by Amelia Cantelli in May 1965.
The plot of The Anniversary focuses on the hectic preparations for anniversary celebrations at a private bank. Confusion and chaos ensue, and a misunderstanding leads to a clerk demanding that the wrong woman should leave the premises…
Cynthia Marsh (nee Ball), who played Tatiana Shipuchina, remembers: “Our year was the first big year in the department, as investment in Russian teaching in schools began to pay off. There were about 28 of us including Joint Honours, and no beginners, though a couple of people came in with O-level rather than A-level. So I think the department felt it could be more adventurous.”
