Преступление и наказание (Crime and Punishment, 1988)

In 1988, Cynthia Marsh took on the task of adapting Dostoevsky for the stage:

“Insanely, I decided to adapt Crime and Punishment. I had to adapt the Dostoevsky text into a drama text. It may say something about Dostoevsky's literary style that it lent itself very well to scenic adaptation....  I also wanted to garner a larger audience, and get round the language barrier for non-Russian speakers. So we had narrators telling the story in English, and students acting scenes in Russian.”

Top right: Each of the cast took a turn as a narrator as well as playing one of the fictional characters. Here, Gina Mance and Jonathan Steel narrate part of the story.

Bottom right: Tony Hall as Svidrigailov with Sue West as Dunya.
