Event details

In this session, Classicist Arlene Holmes-Henderson, Vice-Chair of Universities Policy Engagement Network (UPEN, Arts and Humanities Sub-Committee) and Professor of Public Policy at Durham University, will explain routes into policy engagement for researchers in Arts and Humanities disciplines.

In the first part of the session (1-2pm), she will explain the benefits for academics and their institutions of sharing academic research with policymakers in government, parliament and the devolved nations.

This will be a practical and interactive session, with the opportunity to ask questions and design a strategy for getting started.

During the second part of the session (2-3pm), the newly published case study report titled ‘How Does Arts and Humanities Research Influence Public Policymaking?’ will be showcased.

Authored by Professor Arlene Holmes-Henderson and Laidlaw Scholar Luke Sewell (both based at Durham University), the new report collates case studies from researchers in diverse institutions, spread across the UK, and shares their experiences of working with policy professionals in parliament, national government, devolved administrations, local authorities and policy-adjacent organisations.

The publication offers useful and timely advice on how to establish and deepen relationships with policy colleagues, which we hope will be equally valuable to knowledge exchange professionals.

Contributors to the publication will be hosted by Professor Holmes-Henderson and Luke Sewell during the second hour of the session.
