Saturday 11th November saw seven candidates (one UoN staff member and six UoN students) demonstrate their Mandarin skills in front of a panel of judges and over 30 spectators at the 15th “China and Me” Speech Competition at the Si Yuan Centre.
Established in 2009 by Nottingham Confucius Institute, the “China and Me” Speech Contest is an annual event that offers Mandarin learners an opportunity to test and showcase their language skills. Winners of the contest are selected and trained to represent the University of Nottingham at the following year’s Chinese Bridge Competition.
The contest was divided into two groups: intermediate and advanced levels. Participants touched on a wide range of topics during their presentations, including Chinese food culture, the experience of learning Mandarin, travelling and living in China and making friends with Chinese people, all earning lots of rounds of applause from the audience.
Results of the competition are as below:
First prize winner: Michelle Phan at Advanced Level; Alfie Macdonald-Brown at Intermediate Level
Second prize winner: Michal Zaleski at Advanced Level, Faith Franklin at Intermediate Level
Third prize winner: Toby Maynard and Stephanie Grace Stubbings at Intermediate Level

“中国与我”演讲比赛精彩绽放
2023年11月11日下午，诺丁汉大学孔子学院成功举办了第15届“中国与我”中文演讲比赛。本次比赛由孔院教师安一卓和孔院学员李诗灵共同主持。诺丁汉大学孔子学院中方院长谢芳芳女士、诺丁汉大学孔子学院公派教师徐来博士、语言中心副教授王乃霞博士和郭岚博士担任本次比赛评委。
比赛开始前，诺丁汉大学代表、可信研究中心主任杰森·菲利（Mr. Jason Feehily）致辞，对到场的所有参赛选手和观众表示热烈欢迎，感谢孔院全体教职员工筹备本次比赛，预祝比赛活动圆满成功。
主持人介绍完评分规则和奖项设置后，比赛正式开始。
·中级组：心灵之旅，温馨分享
中级组的选手纷纷从自己的经历出发，深情地讲述了自己和中国的缘分和故事。
第一位登场的选手是1号选手Alfie，他生动分享了自己今年获得奖学金后到中国游学、交友的经历，并为大家带来了一曲《珊瑚舞》钢琴演奏，完美诠释了“中西相融”的内涵。2号选手Stephanie则分享了她的汉语学习历程和未来赴华留学的憧憬，令人印象深刻。3号选手Faith生动介绍了她与中国朋友相识相交的温馨故事，让人动容。
·高级组：风趣幽默，笑声连连
高级组的比赛更是精彩纷呈，高手过招，各显神通。1号选手Michal作为一名“吃货”，以“吃”为切入点，生动地讲述了中国的美食，巧妙地引入与“吃”有关的各种俗语，各类趣闻，赢得现场阵阵笑声。2号选手Toby则分享了他学习中文的经历，Toby在中学时就已经第一次接触并学习中文，还有机会到中国北京游学。这一经历也激发了对他汉语学习的浓厚兴趣。3号选手Michelle生动叙述了她两次在中国的旅行经历，这十多年间的变化让她印象深刻。4号选手Philip讲述了在上海学习生活的有趣故事，为大家带来了阵阵欢笑。
·颁奖典礼：悬念揭晓，相约明年
经过激烈角逐，比赛结果揭晓。高级组的Philip Smith获得优秀奖，中级组的Stephanie Grace Stubbings和高级组的Toby Maynard获得三等奖。二等奖分别授予中级组的Faith Franklin和高级组的Michal Zaleski。中级组的Alfie Macdonald Brown和高级组的Michelle Phan荣膺一等奖，为比赛画上圆满句号。
此次演讲比赛的成功举办不仅为外国学生提供了一个展示自己中文水平和文化理解能力的平台，也进一步激发了学生学习中文和了解中国文化的热情和动力，还增进了中外文化之间的交流和理解。
