Over 1500 pupils aged 5-16 from across seven local schools celebrated the Chinese New Year of the Rabbit with support from NCI between 18 January and 4 February. The schools included Alderman White School, Rushcliffe Academy, Nottingham University Academy of Science and Technology, Nottingham Chinese School, Ormiston Ilkeston Enterprise Academy, Haydn Primary School and St Edmund Campion Primary School. Through interactive workshops led by NCI teachers and student volunteers, pupils learnt various aspects of Lunar New Year traditions and also got the opportunity to try some novel activities such as Tai Chi, Chinese calligraphy, paper cutting and lantern making (pictured right).

We received excellent feedback from both the school staff and the pupils. Here is what they had to say:

“Thank you so much for organising. The children really enjoyed it. It all went very smoothly”. (Head teacher)

“All the NCI staff were so lovely and polite, engaging for the children. They loved all the stickers and treats.” (Y6 teacher)

“There was a real buzz and excitement around the school afterwards!” (Y7 teacher)

“It was great to see some challenging students get involved with learning some Mandarin, especially when they don’t often engage well with our normal language lessons!” (Y8 teacher)

“I loved learning how to say Chinese words properly!” (Year 4 pupil)

“I enjoyed learning the zodiac signs.” (year 5 pupil)

“Overall, it was really interesting and good. It would be nice if they had things like this more often!” (year 8 pupil)
