Mandarin Corner: Traditional Chinese Attire

19/3/2025

On 17 March, Mandarin Corner explored the history and meaning behind traditional Chinese clothing. With over 60 participants, the event was buzzing with excitement and energy – a perfect end to the series for the Spring Term.

The student host opened the session with an insightful presentation on the evolution of Chinese clothing, focusing on Hanfu—the traditional attire of the Han Chinese. Attendees learned about the intricate designs, symbolic meanings, and the role Hanfu has played throughout different dynasties.

Following the presentation, participants had the opportunity to try on Hanfu and experience its elegance firsthand. The interactive session continued with miniature Hanfu model crafting, where our participants were immersed in the intricate detail of this attire, learning calligraphy along the way as they practiced writing Chinese characters using traditional brush and ink.

Another engaging activity was a lively round of Touhu (投壶), an ancient Chinese game that involves throwing arrows into a pot. The game brought out the competitive spirit in our attendees whilst helping them bond and get to know each other after concentrating hard on their Hanfu work. Our Mandarin Corner community are quick Touhou learners, just as they are with Mandarin!

The event was a resounding success. The bringing to life of Chinese heritage through clothing, calligraphy, and traditional games clearly had a strong and very positive impact on our participants. Event highlights can be viewed here.
