18 October saw over 60 University staff members, students and local residents gather for an engaging tie-dye workshop organised by Nottingham Confucius institute. The event, themed around the traditional art of tie-dye, provided an interactive cultural experience while encouraging participants to practice their language skills in both Chinese and English.

The session began with the event host Miss Geng Yiming giving a brief introduction to the origins of tie-dye, tracing its history across various cultures, particularly its significance in China. A demonstration followed, where participants learned the techniques involved, from binding cloth with rubber bands, folding, and bundling to applying vibrant dyes to create unique patterns.

With guidance from Miss Geng and a few other experienced facilitators, participants eagerly got to work, using rubber bands, cloth, and their creativity to craft their own colourful handkerchiefs. Laughter and conversation filled the room as they practised their target languages, chatting in Mandarin and English while they worked.

The event concluded with everyone proudly displaying their one-of-a-kind creations, which they took home to remember the evening by. Some event highlights can be viewed here: https://www.instagram.com/p/DBYjDoGvgcq

This tie-dye workshop was a great example of how NCI’s Mandarin Corner continues to foster cross-cultural understanding and language practice in a fun and welcoming environment. A really colourful, creative, and immersive way to blend culture and language learning!
