On Friday 21 June, Nottingham Confucius Institute (NCI) hosted a Mahjong evening, ending Mandarin Corner for the summer term in style. The event attracted over 40 enthusiastic Nottingham staff, students and local residents.

After an introduction on the origins of Mahjong, student host Miss Li Jinwen explained the rules and some of the basic strategies involved in the Chinese board game, whilst teaching participants to read and memorise the characters and symbols on Mahjong tiles. Miss Li’s talk was very warmly received by Mahjong players of all levels.

After the talk, participants formed groups, faced their rivals and began to put theory into practice. All seemed enthused with a determination to prove themselves. Technical game terms such as “Chi”, “Peng” and “Hupai” were shotted out one after the other, accompanied with bursts of laughers for the rest of the evening till the event ended at 8:00pm.

Feedback was very positive. Many attendees said they had lots of fun and learned to recognise several useful Chinese characters. Some of them also expressed a keen interest in the upcoming NCI Summer School, which will take place every Wednesday evening throughout July.
