5^th May saw over forty UoN staff, students and local residents enthusiastically learn to paint on silk fans with Chinese ink and brushes at the Si Yuan Centre, home to Nottingham Confucius Institute. The workshop was the first Mandarin Corner event of the Summer Term. It was led by local artist Ms Feng-Ru Lee and ran from 6:30-8:00pm. Hightlights from the event can be viewed here.

Ages of participants ranged from 7 to 70+, with all of them applying their creative energies admirably. Several commented how much they enjoyed the chance to learn from a professional Chinese artist and expressed interest in attending more events in the future.

汉语角 | 丹青淋漓，绘写意牡丹扇面

“雅称花中为首冠，年年长占断春光”，牡丹花被誉为“花中之王”，“自李唐来，世人盛爱牡丹”，无数诗词歌赋为吟咏它而诞生，在中国文化历史中占据着重要地位，且“谷雨三朝看牡丹”，正是好时节。因此2023年5月5日星期五晚6点30分，诺丁汉大学孔子学院邀请了当地艺术家李凤茹老师以“牡丹”为绘画主题进行国画教学，绘制团扇扇面，本次参与人员共计42人。

活动开始，李凤茹老师先对本期主题做了简单介绍，并一一讲解了所用到的国画工具，随后便进行绘画示范。

李凤茹老师一边给大家展示所绘花卉的图片，一边预备调色。只见李老师将毛笔浸润并去除多余的水分，将钛白、曙红、胭脂三色挤放在调色盘中，依次蘸取调匀后便在扇面上转动笔杆画出牡丹的一瓣又一瓣饱满鲜活的花瓣，并在绘画过程中强调了调色均匀的重要性和绘画花瓣时层次错落的美感。

示范结束后，中英语伴随即互相交流自己创作想法，并进行尝试，除却尝试绘制牡丹外，众多当地民众还搜索了熊猫扇面或其他具有国画意蕴的参考图片并进行绘制，有一定汉语基础的学生甚至在扇面了写下了自己喜欢的汉字或是契合扇面内容的“题词”，李老师从旁进行指导，大家其乐融融。

活动结束后，所有参与人员举起自己的作品进行合照，手持团扇，为自己的春天增添一抹丹青色、笔墨香。
