The Nottingham Confucius Institute were delighted to support Nottingham Chinese School’s Chinese New Year Gala, which took place on Saturday 27 February. The 90-minute online event was attended by over 300 pupils and their families.
Mr Hao Wu, co-director of Nottingham Confucius Institute gave the opening remarks. “I am very delighted to join you to celebrate the Chinese New Year during these difficult times…In addition to our work at the University, NCI, along with its partner Fudan University and Centre for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC), is committed to supporting Chinese language and cultural programmes at local schools and communities.”
The pre-recorded gala performances were given by school pupils with contributions from almost everyone and broadcast live by two student comperes. The variety and quality of the acts were amazing, including singing (with sign language), dancing, poem/nursery rhyme reading, pippa, gu zheng, violin, KongZhu and Yong Chun Kung Fu.
The successful event was indebted not only to the talented pupils, but also the strong support of parents, the great efforts of the school management team and their class teachers including four overseas volunteer teachers from NCI.
Nottingham Chinese School is a Saturday School offering Mandarin tuition to children, mostly with Chinese heritage, aged 5 to 18. Established by a few Chinese PhD students who were worried about their children not being able to learn Mandarin, the School celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2019, growing from less than 10 pupils to over 200. The School is run by a group of volunteers under the leadership of its headmaster Dr Xue-zhong Sun, who works as senior researcher at the University of Nottingham.
