NCI Spring Camp off to a flying start

19 students began their NCI Spring Camp to China adventure on Monday 8 April, visiting Shanghai and Beijing in their first week. They immersed themselves in Mandarin lessons and a variety of cultural activities at Fudan University, including Chinese cooking sessions and dragon and lion dancing workshops. They also visited sites of historical interest in both cities, managing to take in the Bund, Yu Garden,
Great Wall, Summer Palace and Forbidden City all within their first week!

17 of the 19 participants are currently studying full time at the University of Nottingham. From 12 different schools and departments across all five faculties, they represent a broad range of academic and career interests at the university. The other two participants are young professionals learning Mandarin part time at NCI.

The trip is organised by NCI and delivered by our partner Fudan University in Shanghai with support from University of Nottingham Ningbo Campus (UNNC). The aim of the programme is to provide UoN and NCI students an opportunity to learn Mandarin in a real-life setting whilst experiencing aspects of Chinese culture that only a visit can provide.

The spring camp students have a busy schedule ahead. Following their visit to Beijing, they will head for Ningbo, where they will attend some of the exciting celebratory events to mark the 20 th Anniversary of (UNNC), before returning to Shanghai and then the UK on 19 April.

The students are already starting to feedback on their experience: “I’m really happy! Shanghai is beautiful and my experience is fantastic!” commented one; “I absolutely love the food here – it’s delicious and amazing value for money!” said another.
