The Nottingham Confucius Institute (NCI) once again opened its doors to offer an immersive language-learning experience to University of Nottingham staff, students, and local residents. Held at the Si Yuan Centre every Wednesday evenings between 3 -24 July, the summer school attracted over 70 eager Mandarin learners aged between 10 and 70+.

The annual NCI Summer School is known for its comprehensive curriculum, which includes language classes, cultural workshops and interactive activities. Seven classes were open this year to suit students of different levels of proficiency, focusing on practical language usage. Experienced instructors, all of them native Chinese speakers, employed a variety of teaching techniques to engage and improve participants' language skills through innovative interactive classroom activities.

In addition, the summer school offered a range of cultural events including a session on traditional Chinese music with live performances and workshops on lantern making and bamboo weaving. These elements of the programme helped to build a holistic understanding of Chinese culture among the participants. Some of the event highlights can be viewed here.

Feedback from the Mandarin students was overwhelmingly positive. Many praised the programme for its welcoming atmosphere and the opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds who share a common interest in learning Mandarin and Chinese culture. "The Summer School has been an incredible experience," said one local resident. "Not only have I improved my language skills, but I've also gained a deeper appreciation for Chinese culture."

The programme concluded with a closing ceremony, where participants enjoyed a delicious Chinese buffet, celebrated their achievements and played fun games such as mahjong and chopstick ping-pong pickup. As the summer school wrapped up, many attendees were already looking forward to next year's programme, eager to continue their Mandarin learning journey.
