Nottingham Confucius Institute were delighted to offer weekly Tai Chi practice sessions for University staff, students and members of the general public between 28 January and 18 March. The events took place every Friday between 12:00-12:45pm, led by Dr Lan Lo, a qualified Tai Chi instructor and member of staff at the University.
Over the past eight weeks, Lan introduced ‘Five-Animal Exercises’ (五禽戏 in Chinese), one of the most widely practiced forms of traditional Chinese Qigong inspired by the work of Chinese physician Huatuo, who lived during the time of the Donghan Dynasty over 2,000 years ago. Using effective breathing control and the mimicking of animal postures and movements (those of bears, tigers, apes, deer and birds) Five-Animal Exercises is widely considered to be an effective exercise for the promotion of physical and mental wellbeing.
The workshops were very well received by participants. “Dr Lan is a fantastic teacher - clear instructions and great!” commented one. “Very easy to follow, good level of interaction, even online, with people able to join from all around the country,” said another. Several participants thanked Nottingham Confucius Institute for organising the event and expressed a wish to continue with weekly Tai Chi practice in the future.
