NCI holds online training event for local Mandarin teachers

11 July saw NCI’s annual teaching training programme take place online via Zoom. The event ran from 10:00-12:00 and attracted nearly ninety Mandarin teachers based at local primary and secondary schools in the UK.

The first session was delivered by Mr Nick Brown, a local secondary school language teacher and department head, who also previously worked as assistant headteacher responsible for teaching and learning. Drawing upon nearly 20 years of work experience, Nick brought classroom management to life, giving top tips on how to create a positive, can-do classroom climate and how to be an assertive practitioner and maintain control. This was followed by a lecture from Ms Xiaoming Zhu, National Network Coordinator at the UCL IOE Confucius Institute. Xiaoming was the first Chinese national to gain UK Qualified Teacher Status, and her rich experience and insight in curriculum development, resource creation and teacher training were in clear evidence in her “How to Conduct Differentiated Teaching Online” lecture. Xiaoming discussed the importance of differentiated teaching and demonstrated how to implement it in online classrooms to help individual students reach their full potential.    

Each talk included a 15 minute Q and A session, where attendees asked an array of interesting questions. 

Both sessions were very well received and invited glowing feedback from participants. “Today’s training was really enlightening. Clearly, both speakers are very experienced language teachers. I can’t thank them enough for sharing so many useful tips and the benefit of their expertise.” commented one attendee. “I’ve learnt a great deal today. Both topics were very well chosen – these are the areas Mandarin teachers at local schools struggle with most! Both speakers were absolutely fantastic!” commented another. Many participants, including the headteacher of Nottingham Chinese School, expressed their gratitude to NCI for offering this illuminating and practical professional development opportunity.

当地时间2010年7月11日，英国诺丁汉大学孔子学院成功举办了本土教师培训。该培训旨在解决疫情后线上教学中的课堂管理和差异化教学这两个问题，有近90位老师参与了这次培训。

本次培训邀请到多年教授法语、西班牙语、俄语和拉丁语的Nick Brown和伦敦大学教育研究院孔子学院的朱晓茗老师。Nick介绍了一系列的课堂管理策略为老师赋能，他提供了有效实用的建议，使老师能更自信沉着，课堂氛围更活跃，学生能更积极地参与课堂。朱晓茗老师则跟与会老师针对差异化教学是什么，为什么用，怎么用展开讨论，通过理论与实践的结合，呈现了如何在课堂教学的不同阶段、不同级别进行差异化教学。

讲座结束后两位嘉宾一一作答与会老师的问题。老师们表示讲座解决了课堂中的不少问题，具有实用性、启发性与思考性，迫不及待在之后的教学中加以运用并期待良好的教学效果。
