NCI holds annual local teacher training event

On Sunday 9 July, Nottingham Confucius Institute (NCI) held its annual teacher training programme at Si Yuan Centre. The event ran from 9:30am to 2:00pm and attracted over 50 attendees, including teachers from local primary and secondary schools, Confucius Institutes and master’s students from Nottingham’s School of Education.

The day began with a workshop on classroom management entitled “Being an engaging teacher - in control and calm” by Mr Nick Brown, an educational consultant, who worked as a local secondary school teacher and departmental head. Nick demonstrated effective techniques on how to engage students and manage their behaviour in the classroom whilst making learning fun. The workshop was followed with a keynote speech entitled “Chinese Language Teaching and GCSE Exam”,  by Ms Xiaohua Chen, an experienced Mandarin teacher and GCSE examiner currently teaching at Sheffield Confucius Institute. Drawing upon 15 years of language teaching experience, Xiaohua presented current teaching methodologies and good practice on how to teach local school pupils and prepare them for their GCSE exam.

Following the keynote speech, parallel discussions were conducted in three groups focusing on current hot topics in language teaching. The participants also shared experiences and challenges along with solutions and good practice. 

Feedback from all participants was extremely positive, with several local teachers thanking NCI for offering such a wonderful opportunity for them to gather together each year to recharge and learn something new.

7月9日9点30分，诺丁汉大学孔子学院2023年度本土教师培训在孔院本部思源楼正式拉开帷幕。参加本次本土教师培训的有谢菲尔德大学孔院教师代表、考文垂大学孔院教师代表、诺丁汉及其周边地区的本土汉语教师和诺丁汉大学教育学院在读研究生代表等50余人。

培训由诺丁汉大学孔院教学与学术主管教师徐来老师主持。诺丁汉大学代表杰森·菲利（Jason Feehily）先生及诺丁汉大学孔院中方院长谢芳芳女士先后致辞。杰森·菲利先生对各位老师共建汉语教学网络，积极提升汉语教学能力表示了赞赏与肯定；谢芳芳女士则对到场的各位表示欢迎，对认真付出的孔院团队表示感谢.

培训共分两个环节——讲座及经验交流会。讲座嘉宾尼克·布朗（Nick Brown）先生以《做一个有吸引力的老师 - 冷静掌控课堂》为题开展讲座。

尼克·布朗先生理论与实践穿插进行，将语言知识教学、课堂活动与课堂管理紧密结合，现场展示了自己生动有趣的课堂教学。他还就如何积极管理、冷静掌控课堂提出了有效的办法，特别提出了“Never be personal, but say the rule is…”的课堂管理原则，给予了在场老师深刻启发。
