On June 8, 240 Cantrell Primary School pupils immersed themselves in Chinese language and culture, with fun activities delivered by four NCI teachers. All KS2 students, aged 8 to 11, learnt how to count from 1 to 10 in Chinese and managed to sing the Chinese nursery rhyme “Where are my friends?” during the language half of the session. They also did origami during the culture session, where younger children had fun making and flipping paper frogs whilst the older ones enjoyed the more demanding task of making lanterns.
Feedback from pupils and school teachers was very positive. Many pupils said they loved counting in Chinese and that the nursery rhyme helped them to memorise the numbers. “The children clearly had lots of fun today… Year 5 loved the origami activity, they found it challenging but were very engaged!” commented one teacher.
Shortly after the event, a school representative thanked NCI for our teachers’ hard work and said that they would like us to run a Chinese New Year follow up session next year so that the pupils could get to know more about Chinese culture.
