Description

The Centre for Spartan and Peloponnesian Studies would like to welcome you to their annual lecture, featuring guest speaker Dr Bjorn Forsén.

Dr Forsén is currently senior lecturer in history at the University of Helsinki and former director of the Finnish Institute at Athens (2004-2007). For this lecture he will be presenting the impressive results from his excavations in central Arcadia, in particular an entirely unknown sanctuary dedicated to Artemis Lykoatis, the only known sanctuary in Greece dedicated to the mythical goddess with this topographical attribute. This unexpected discovery has contributed immensely to our understanding of the ancient geography of Arkadia and has revealed mysteries and secrets hidden in the natural and sacred landscape of Greece.

Further research areas that Dr Forsén has explored include the history of the Mediterranean world, the history of religion during antiquity, city-states and federalism in Europe from antiquity to the early modern period and pre-modern empires to name a few.

The lecture will be followed by drinks in the Humanities Atrium to which all are welcome. Later the speaker and lecture attendees will be going to Antalya restaurant in Nottingham. If you would like to dine with the speaker please contact Chrysanthi Gallou by noon on Thursday 6 March.
