Melton and Southwell halls - essential works

Wednesday, 16 December 2020
Those living in Southwell and Melton halls are to be relocated from January 2021 while essential works are carried out.

The university carries out regular checks on all of our buildings, including halls of residence, to ensure that they are safe for occupants.

During a recent survey, a number of issues were identified in Melton and Southwell halls. This relates to passive measures that stop the spread of fire through a building.

Both the university and the fire service are satisfied that students can safely remain in the halls during the works. However, this work, which will take place over the next few months, will be noisy and disruptive at times and so the university has taken the decision to relocate occupants while this is being completed.

This is because many of you are doing online lectures, seminars and timetabled events in your rooms due to the current Covid-related restrictions and we want to ensure you can carry out your studies peacefully.

Those in Southwell Hall will move to Newark Hall in January 2021 for the rest of the academic year. Both halls are identical in their offering.

Those in Melton Hall can opt to remain in the self-catered hall and move to a quieter part of the building or move to Newark Hall with complimentary catering as there are no self-catering rooms within Newark.

Again the university would like to stress that the halls remain safe for staff and students. We have been in touch with all students affected and are supporting them in advance of the move.
