Whether this is your first time away from home or you’re a returning student, follow the below advice to keep yourself and those around you safe.

Personal safety

Nottingham is a safe and friendly city. However, like anywhere else you need to be sensible while out and about. Opportunistic crime can be avoided by following the following safety advice.

  • Stay alert
Walk confidently, remain aware of your surroundings, and keep valuables hidden.
  • On a night out
Stay with friends, don’t leave drinks unattended and avoid drinking excessive amounts of alcohol.
  • Coming home
Keep enough money to pay for your journey home, avoid travelling alone and have keys ready when approaching your accommodation.

If you run out of money, the Safer Taxi Scheme offers fixed prices and the option to pay the following day at the Students’ Union.

If you need urgent medical help or are in danger call 999, and for non-emergency crimes call Nottingham Police on 101.

Campus Security provides a 24-hour uniformed presence on all campuses. The office is open Monday-Friday, 8am-4pm and they can be contacted on 0115 951 3013 (0115 951 8888 in emergencies).

*Top tip*
Add these numbers to your phone now to make them easier to find in an emergency.

Staying safe online

University students are sometimes targeted by phishing emails seeking personal information such as passwords and financial details. Cyber criminals can create realistic looking emails and login pages for banks, Microsoft and other services, so stay alert and don’t get caught out!

*Top tip*
Always check you recognise the URL for any websites you log in to and do not click any links or open any email attachments if you do not know the sender.

Other forms of cyber crime to remain aware of, include sextortion, revenge porn and relationship blackmail where victims are persuaded into performing acts of a sexual nature which is then recorded. Nobody has the right to share intimate images or videos of you without your consent so think before you share, even if you are in a relationship.

Cycle and vehicle safety

Bikes are often targeted by thieves when they are secured poorly or not at all.

When out and about, lock your bike up every time you leave it using a D-Lock and ideally a second lock if possible.

*Top tip*
Fasten your bike through the frame and wheel to a fixed object, prioritising busy and well-lit places in view of CCTV or people.

When on campus, make use of our secure bike storage units, accessed using your student card. The locations of these can be found using our interactive cycle maps. You should also protect your bike by permanently marking it for identification and recording its details on Bike Register.
