According to UCAS data, in 2019, only 35% of STEM students studying at university are female.
Here at Nottingham we are working hard to raise the profile of women in STEM and encourage our students and alumni to become empowering role models for the next generation.
To celebrate International Women’s Day we are hosting “Inspiring women in STEM: Celebrating the journey”, a virtual talk aimed at current and prospective STEM students, alumni, staff and the wider community. The talk will be hosted by the University’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Equality, Diversity & Inclusion and People, Professor Sarah Sharples.
For 2021 the official International Women’s Day campaign theme is #ChooseToChallenge. Our “Inspiring women in STEM: Celebrating the journey” talk will explore the challenges women face working in the male-dominated fields of STEM and how we can create an inclusive and more gender-equal world. We will look to discuss women’s struggles, whilst also celebrating successes, showcasing triumphs and identifying ways in which we can all contribute to making change happen.
