Dr Stefan Hunt, Honorary Professor of Economics at the Nottingham School of Economics has been appointed Chief Data and Digital Insights Officer at the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).
Stefan will head up the new data unit to help the CMA better understand the impact that data, machine learning and algorithms have on markets and the people using them. He completed his PhD in Economics at Harvard University and was appointed an Honorary Professor at Nottingham in 2018.
Speaking about his new appointment, Stefan emphasised the importance of understanding the role of digital technology in modern markets and society: ‘My team will be working with colleagues to address questions such as ‘How should we regulate tech, if at all?’ And ‘What data and analytics techniques do competition and consumer protection regulators need to figure this out?’ This is going to be a fascinating job addressing really important questions currently facing society.’
In addition to his role as Honorary Professor at Nottingham, Stefan is also a member of the School Advisory Group.
