On Friday 18 February 2022 the School of Economics held its third annual Alumni Conference. Twelve former students returned (virtually) to speak to current students about their careers since leaving the University of Nottingham.
The event, hosted by School of Economics Careers Liaison Officer, Dr Valeria Rueda, was divided into three panel and Q&A sessions where the alumni presented about their careers, shared tips for using an economics degree at work and, in some cases, stories about how their career paths and expectations have changed over time.
The first panel covered careers in Consulting and Finance, and included speakers who work (or have worked) at Intesa Sanpaolo, Morgan Stanley, Barclays, Capital One and Grant Thornton UK.
On the second panel, focusing on careers in Government and Policy, the alumni spoke of their work with the UK Trade Authority, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Department of Health and Social Care, as well as the various routes into the Civil Service.
To finish, a panel on ‘Diverse Careers for Economists’ brought together alumni who have followed less-traditional career paths to work in areas such journalism, marketing, entrepreneurship, the military and data science.
Feedback from both students and staff who attended was incredibly positive including the following quote from a second year Politics and Economics student who attended panel three:
‘These insights have been really reassuring, I'm a second-year Politics and Econ student and am trying to discover my passions and take every opportunity, whereas a lot of my friends are solely focusing on banking. Thank-you for giving me a bit of confidence’
The School of Economics would like to extend a huge thank you to those alumni who gave up their time to attend the event.
