Description

The Global Childhoods Research Group is hosting an academic visit by Dr Suzannie Leung from The Chinese University of Hong Kong in May 2024. This seminar is the first of two seminars that Dr Leung will present during her visit.

Abstract

In the Hong Kong Education Bureau for the 21st Century, early visual arts education was introduced at the beginning of the new millennium. However, due to the increasing influence of market forces on early childhood education in Hong Kong, there has been a shift towards prioritising academic skills and achievements over 'non-academic' visual arts. As a result, parents, teachers, principals, and even researchers have neglected early visual arts education. This seminar encompasses two parts. The first session focuses on my doctoral study, which examined the implementation of early visual arts education in Hong Kong kindergartens and investigated whether there was a gap between teachers' beliefs and their actual practices. The second session expands on my doctoral thesis and explores the beliefs and practices of kindergarten teachers regarding early visual arts education using the theory of planned behaviour. I will present the key findings and implications of both studies, which could be particularly useful for postgraduate students seeking guidance on constructing research in their early careers after completing their doctorate.
