Lesson study, as practised in Japan, has a reputation as being a particularly effective model of professional development.

This year the Centre for Research in Mathematics Education (CRME) has been collaborating with colleagues from IMPULS (International Math-teacher Professionalization Using Lesson Study) in Japan in an attempt to develop collaborative modes of professional learning with mathematics teachers in England. This work has been supported by Bowland Maths and has explored adopting lesson study principles in mathematics with a focus on developing teaching and learning in relation to problem solving. It has involved a network of four schools centered on Nottingham and five schools in London.

This seminar will be led by colleagues from IMPULS whilst on one of their week-long visits to take part in lesson study in England and will provide an opportunity to learn more about:

  • lesson study principles and practice in Japan in relation to mathematics
  • issues relating to adopting and adapting lesson study in different cultural settings
  • the challenges of teaching and learning problem solving in mathematics
