Description

Professor Jeremy Hodgen, Professor of Mathematics Education, Department of Education and Professional Studies, Kings College London

Should students study mathematics to 18? In a recent study of participation in upper secondary mathematics I showed England to be an international “outlier” with comparatively low participation (Hodgen et al, 2010). As a result, Michael Gove announced an aspiration that “that within a decade the vast majority of pupils are studying maths right through to the age of 18”. In this seminar, I will draw on the findings of three studies recently carried out for the Nuffield Foundation and the Sutton Trust. I will consider what can be learnt from international comparisons of policy as well as the potential pitfalls.

Refreshments will be available.
