Neil Mercer University of Cambridge
Drawing on the results of recent research projects, I will discuss what we know about the ways that classroom talk can affect the involvement and learning of students of maths and science. The most recent of these projects, the Cambridge-based EpiSTEME, has involved over 20 secondary schools, and is designed to encourage Year 7 students’ commitment to maths and science and to enable them to achieve better levels of understanding of those subjects. Its intervention programme has aimed to enable teachers to change the conventional patterns of talk in their classrooms, to plan effective ways of engaging students in collaborative learning.
This talk will take place in Room C41, Dearing Building, Jubilee Campus
Refreshments will be available from 4.00 pm
