CRME: Listening and metacommunication: for the teaching and learning of mathematics

Dr Alf Coles, University of Bristol

In this session Alf will draw on classroom video data and audio recordings of teachers working with these videos, collected as part of an ESRC project. From considering the role of the teacher and the role of the facilitator of teacher discussion, some striking parallels emerge - these parallels are in the significance of metacommunication and the importance of a particular form of listening that seems to be required.
