Professor Kathleen Pithouse-Morgan was a guest speaker at the Network for Educational Action Research Ireland autumn meeting, which was held at the Marino Institute of Education in Dublin and online. The event focused on self-study as a movement and methodology for inside-out educational change.
Drawing on collaborative research with Dr Makie Kortjass and Dr Ntokozo Mkhize-Mthembu from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, Professor Pithouse-Morgan's talk explored the transformative potential of self-study research in education.
The presentation highlighted the dynamic evolution of self-study research since the 1990s, showcasing its powerful impact on educators and scholars. A comprehensive meta-analysis identified eight interconnected characteristics of self-study, offering adaptable tools for fostering ongoing educational improvement and innovation. The session also included case studies, illustrating how self-study fosters self-reflexive, ethical inquiry, promotes interactive learning, challenges educational policies, and broadens educational knowledge.
This talk emphasised how self-study has become a driving force for meaningful inside- out change through practitioner research, contributing to a self-reflexive and transformative approach to practice and policy.
