Biography

Manny has a background working in disability student support, widening participation, education development, and quality enhancement.

Expertise Summary

His research interests are on the processes of social exclusion/inclusion related to 'race', ethnicity and disability. He is a sociologist of education currently engaged in research projects with a focus on widening participation and culturally relevant teaching in higher education.

Teaching Summary

Manny is currently teaching on BA Education and MA Special and Inclusive Education. He is also supervising MA dissertations and doctoral students in the School of Education.

Research Summary

Manny is currently researching matters of race, disability, and equality in accessing higher education.

From 2025-2028, Manny, as Co-I, is currently undertaking research on an ESRC project titled: Amplifying the mental health of Black university students: A Black, Mad and Disability Studies Intersectional Inquiry, alongside Durham University, University of Sheffield, and University of Herfordshire.

From 2022-2026, Manny is currently conducting research and evaluation work, alongside Sheffield Hallam University, on increasing access and participation for Black, Asian, and minority ethnic groups in postgraduate research study. This is a part of the evaluation strand for the Yorkshire Consortium for Equity in Doctoral Education www.ycede.ac.uk

From 2023-2025, Manny, as PI, has undertaken a Leverhulme Research Fellowship on hope for anti-racist change in higher education. Details of this project was featured in the May 2023 Leverhulme Trust newsletter (p.15).
