Unit Two: Design and Build Studio

Rise Build 2021

The RISE build results from a multi-year partnership between the design+build studio and RISE learning zone. In 2018 the Design and Build studio broadened its focus to take on local projects to complement our work in South Africa.   The RISE build is the first of more successful local builds for the studio.

Working collaboratively with the teachers and staff at RISE – students from the DB studio were able to craft a design that fit the brief of “funky” and natural materials to develop a small bespoke classroom for the learners at RISE.  The directors at RISE were able to attract funding to support the build – and allow the project to proceed.  This project represents the most significant investment in dedicated space that many of the learners have ever seen.

The studio was able to take on this project because of the dedication and hard work shown by our students.  In a year of socially distant and digital teaching – the very hands-on experience  of building together was the highlight of the year for the studio.
