This studio project aimed to link housing research in dense waterfront typologies and residential master planning with mixed-use components. The assignment included the masterplan design of an entire neighbourhood and the architectural design of one representative residential block. Liverpool Waters is a new mixed-use development, delivering five new distinct neighbourhoods at the edge of Liverpool’s city centre. This project focuses on master planning Northern Docks, a neighbourhood with historical heritage and a modern lifestyle. Carved out by the water network, the backdrop of ancient industrial buildings and a new world-class stadium, Northern Docks has the opportunities for on-land and on-water living. The design followed a high-density experiment while creating a high quality of life in this neighbourhood, aiming to attract people of different social backgrounds to live together. The main strategy was to provide townhouses in the western part of the site to attract families, to integrate a leisure centre as a landmark, and to establish flats and services in the neighbourhood's eastern part.
