Examining the existing building can identify the extent of potential for both retaining the existing fabric and improving it. To create better homes inside architecture built to last, it is desirable to retain as much of the existing fabric as possible while improving thermal, daylighting, and spatial qualities of the buildings.
The scheme looks at creating cohousing and workspaces for a musical community of like-minded individuals through a language of renewal. Exploring the intricacies of home life with a balance between work and live, re-purposing the existing building is integral to create an intentional community that can be fully inhabited.
Areas of social interaction between multiple generations have been created whilst retaining space for the expression of human individuality.
Studio 3 took an approach of ‘Renew, Re-inhabit’ to maximise the value of what already exists and through iterative sketch design, focus on generosity in material, spatial quality, rural character and the balance of privacy and sociability.
Student Biography Prior to studying Part II architecture at the University of Nottingham, I completed Part I at De Montfort University. My interests are art and architecture, and how they overlap to create places that have personality, and how layers of history present in a place should guide intervention. To ensure the sustainability of existing buildings, the evolution of architecture must be supported, while respecting their history, this naturally gave way to picking Studio 3 as my Unit choice.
