Living Structures

The Nature of Things. New Lanark Mill, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Artist Residency, Studio & Public Exhibition Space; a radical collective living. Construction, memory and atmosphere; connecting our dwelling, our history, our existence, to the physical world. Stone ruin, timber frame, masonry & plywood vaults. Buildings scattered in the landscape. Like logs in a wave.

This project presents the application of the thesis - ‘The Nature of Things: An Architecture of Atmosphere & Memory’, creating a new artists’ residency and public exhibition hall in the industrial village of New Lanark, uniting the physical, historic & cultural qualities of the place with a contemporary idea of community. These new buildings are integrated within a wider landscape strategy for the Clyde Valley Walk. Through the articulation of its construction, the project aims to enrich the atmosphere of its context whilst expressing the nature of our dwelling, intertwining the physical world with our human condition.

Unit 2 – Living Structures challenges the convention of sustainability as a purely technical practice, arguing for a more holistic approach to construction, one that embodies the historic, cultural & architectural qualities of a particular place.

Student Biography

After studying for my undergraduate degree in Nottingham, I worked for 2 years in St Ives, Cambridgeshire. From this experience, local community, history, and culture became of great importance to me when designing projects. This has been developed further during the MArch course, providing great insight into how to achieve modern values of sustainability in a way that is sensitive and considerate to individual contexts.
