The project explores ways to create a rich, multi-layered relationship between ornament and structure that ties new intervention to place. Ornament is taken beyond the graphic, made experiential and connected to past, present, and future. The first floor of a derelict 19th century goods depot is transformed into a centre for psychological therapies and the ground floor becomes an open extension of a park. Patterns in the urban fabric across time are uncovered as memories of the sweeping railway tracks are overlaid with organic paths. Historical, dotted ancillary structures inform the creation of a new ornamental garden whilst the character of the found condition informs an ‘ad hoc’ language of scaffolded stairs. A memoir inspires an idea about looking out over the roof tops of Derby and the programmatic history of the warehouse building informs a language of boxes. Elements combine in response to the focus of studio 1 which encourages the careful reading of the existing to drive expressive architectural ideas that are connected to history, evolving a site with continuity.
Student Biography Being part of studio 1 has taught me new ways of looking at a site and new ways to generate architectural ideas that are connected to place. Being open to observing layers of history and experimenting with the poetic potential of construction and materiality are things that will enrich my practice in the future.
