Building Futures is an over-18s adult education hub, a response to declining interest in engineering and technology education, the ever-increasing desire for people to change occupations that has been boosted post-pandemic, as well as a catalyst for growth and change within a more deprived part of Nottingham.
North of the Meadows estate, south of the city centre, the education hub takes advantage of brownfield land, paying homage to the area’s industrial past with expressive sawtooth roofing and exposed structural system, wrapped in a polycarbonate facade that glows at night, a beacon over the area.
Students at the hub take an upwards journey through a plethora of informal education spaces that peel off the stairs. These areas are anchored by the two workshops, where the shifting space adapts to accommodate different hands-on activities and allows the hub to keep up with the fast-changing definition of education. This is not a school, but a celebration of education, achievement, the diverse community, and city.
Student Biography Alex is a third year undergrad from Hertfordshire, who loves creating schemes which invite the user to define spaces themselves. This is often through adaptable interventions which are integral to his designs after 2 years in Unit 5C Adapt/Adept. He loves to create rich, detailed, and characterful images which tell a story of the people in the space, and these spaces are often highly permeable, with distorted separations between spaces created by materiality, levels and adaptivity.
