The project brief established the intention to create a building that was a unique fusion between educational, community, and cultural activities in Edinburgh - a new student hub with a community focus.
The proposed scheme aims to become a ‘new front door to the city’, better connecting town and gown - blurring the boundaries between the university and city. The idea of the building becoming a piece of urban connective tissue, both in a local and broader context, became inherently important throughout. Inevitably, leading to the revival of the ‘wynds’, routes, and connections in the adjacent context - injecting a new lease of life into the Cowgate area of Edinburgh.
The scheme incorporates new public green spaces, from courtyards to roof gardens, which add to the current lexicon of public spaces in Edinburgh, creating spaces for people to meet, socialise and enjoy. This allows for increased engagement and all activities within the building to be put on display, creating an architecture that is ‘open to all’.
Student Biography Max is a third-year undergraduate from Birmingham. As part of Unit 1B, his work has focused on introducing contemporary interventions harmoniously into their immediate physical, as well as larger socio-historical contexts, researching the historical, physical, cultural, and social circumstances of each project to create an architecture that is deeply embedded in its surrounding context.
