Unit 1A, "Forgotten Places," delves into areas in need of urban regeneration. My project, based in Middlesbrough, aims to revitalise the Middlehaven area, which is largely a blank canvas, despite sporadic improvement efforts.

Acquired brain injury is the leading cause of death and disability among children and young people. Middlesbrough hospitals lack a dedicated neurology department, requiring patients to travel further afield. The proposal envisions a neuro-rehabilitation centre for children and young people, specialising in hydro-wellness therapies. The centre will provide housing and care for the children and accommodation for their families. Its proximity to Middlesbrough College makes the riverfront location ideal, facilitating rehabilitation and reintegration into schools and society. The hub aims to enhance neuro-rehabilitative care beyond current NHS provisions.

My project utilises the unused Bolckow and Vaughan's Ironworks locomotive shed beside the River Tees. By merging old and new architectural elements and addressing the site's flood risks, the design ensures adaptability and resilience to the future.
