Re-Rooting : A modular housing and urban farming scheme addressing homelessness in Nottingham

This project works to address the homelessness problem within Nottingham through emergency and long-term housing solutions, in conjunction with urban farming practices to develop an internal employment scheme and further the community outreach.

Nottingham has the highest number of rough sleepers in the East Midlands, having increased by 20% over the last two years, and despite the national issues surrounding growing homelessness, ‘hostile’ architecture continues to be favoured over infrastructural solutions.

Unit 1C, “Urban Futures”, promotes people-centred design which fosters social interaction whilst using housing typologies as a tool for urban transformation.

This project’s design focuses on challenging isolation and encouraging interaction at every level of the scheme, whilst the programme requires a combination of both private housing units and public urban farming facilities. In response, a connective network comprised of both horizontal and vertical circulation created through deck access and external stairs, works to bridge the public and private spaces within this scheme.
