A project that responds to the climate crisis on the built environment and the local community.

Eve Bailey

Eve completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Nottingham in 2021, working for rg+p in Leicester in her year out before returning to complete her MArch. Her architectural interests include preserving historic importance and memory within each site, as well as exploring innovative solutions within residential living to battle with ever-increasing space constraints.

The North Woolwich Community: Makers and Creators

This thesis takes the idea of creating and maintaining ambiguity, allowing the site’s history to prevail despite modern interventions. In a flood risk area, the impact of the temporal ambiguity created by the water helps create a future-proofed design in the current climate crisis.

The ethos of Studio 2 includes the importance of creating architectural interventions which become public contributions to the city. This is highlighted by the creation of multiple charged ground planes, with the flexible market spaces occupying the lower ground (flood level), creating areas which are allowed to be flooded with minimal impact to the habitable spaces above.

Across urban, building and tectonic scale, ambiguity within the design remains the focus. This extends from creating interstitial spaces between balancing figure and void, to utilising the site’s existing materials in potentially unexpected ways. This includes a programme which fosters community, creating an inclusive space for all allows the community to come together and to celebrate their differences. In addition, providing all residents with flexible living options and dedicated workspaces, allows for the optional detachment in the home between work and play.
