Urban Provisioning

Studio 1 – Nottingham Garden City has focussed on referencing and integrating into the then-innovative inter-war housing estate which surrounds it.

This scheme is an intentional co-living community for the Whitemoor Gardenholders Cooperative Society Ltd, located between the River Leen and the Whitemoor Allotments.

The scheme combines multi-family houses and flats with shared communal sun terraces and greenhouses as well as a community greengrocers and preserving kitchen and a small cluster of retail units.

Designed to a Passivhaus standard and orientated to maximise sunlight hours for the occupants and their greenhouses, the scheme is organised around three courtyards. Within the shared houses, clusters of individual bedrooms share sunspaces, kitchen and living areas are then shared by the whole house.

The scheme draws on the materiality and Arts-and-Crafts style of the surrounding Whitemoor Estate. Located in an area prone to flooding, resilience is provided by changing the topography of the site to create a low-lying wetland.
