Sustainable Urban Design: Advance Design Project 2, New Urban Comunities module

Quarter Equilibrium

As a group of six students, we completed a project in Nottingham's Island Quarter. An area just outside the city center with a rich history. The site measures approximately 5.4 hectares and is currently mostly empty land. This was included in our Advanced Design Project 2 Module's New Urban Communities section. The studio's goal was to create a high-density neighbourhood for new urban communities in Nottingham's Island Quarter, with an emphasis on courtyards. Following our initial research, we named our project Quarter Equilibrium. The quarter in the name comes from Island Quarter, and the equilibrium represents the balance we wanted to achieve throughout our site.

I did my Undergraduate in Human geography. During this, I discovered my passion for people and places. I wanted to take this further and use my creativity as well through Urban Design. The New Urban Communities studio has taught me a lot about how we can create better places for people. I look forward to using the information I have learned in the future.

The urban scale and sustainable approach of the studio have enriched and expanded my knowledge and my architectural background, as urban design integrates multiple disciplines including transportation, land use, environmental protection, and housing. The social impacts of urban plans are crucial, and the quality of housing and a new urban model are fundamental in responding to the demands of a growing population, enhancing at the same time a community-based solution, livability, and walkability.
