Manasa Madhukar

Growing up in state of Kerala, India, I developed a deep appreciation for nature, which shaped my journey as an architect. Witnessing environmental degradation, I now design sustainable buildings that reduce our ecological footprint, blending my passion for the natural world with my professional skills to create a greener future.

The Attenborough Nature Reserve Centre - Redesign and Extension

The Studio Project posed a challenge to design a sustainable research facility and expanded nature center at the Attenborough Nature Reserve. Working with the East Midlands Development Company (EMDevCo), the project refurbished the existing iconic but undersized nature center, and designed a new building to house a research center, offices, and a multi-purpose space. The project emphasized integrating environmental design strategies from the early stages to create comfortable, energy-efficient spaces that were adaptable and fostered collaboration. The project aimed to enhance the reserve's role as a haven for wildlife, a beacon for well-being, and a living laboratory for sustainability. Inclusion of proposals for innovative solutions, such as floating structures, that celebrated the unique setting while minimizing the impact on the existing center and wildlife habitat were encouraged. The studio encouraged the use of various performance simulation tools like IESVE, PHPP, Optivent and Sefaira for optimum design.
