Sustainability Engineer at Rolls Royce

There were two things I enjoyed most about the course - having aero only design spaces to work from, and having good amounts of coursework that are similar to tasks in real world projects.

Why did you choose to study engineering?

I like to know how things work and rockets are pretty cool!

What attracted you to study at the University of Nottingham?

The university was one of a select few offering an aerospace specific course. I was also offered the opportunity to row on a scholarship. The university campus facilities seemed fantastic.

What were the lecturers and fellow students like?

Most lecturers were excellent teachers alongside their research, but more importantly they were always keen to help outside of their teaching hours.

Fellow students were on the whole, kind, like-minded people with a similar passion for understanding how things work. This made group work much easier as all were keen to contribute their equal share.

What advice would you give to current engineering students at Nottingham?

Apply for summer internships from first year onwards. I was rejected by Rolls-Royce in my first year, but this was a valuable learning experience for my second year interview which I secured. From here I was offered another summer internship in 3rd year. This meant when it came to graduation and the graduate scheme, I was lucky enough to be selected during Covid. Besides the value in securing future employment, they were also really fun and I was paid real money!

Nottingham very much gave me a flavour for what being an engineer might be like. The opportunity to pursue sport to the level I did alongside my studies was very valuable too, and meant I could leave university satisfied that I made use of all that was on offer.
